My weekend was so great!
I got up at 5.30 on Saturday because we went to the uni tkd championships that were being held in Liverpool, and the bus was leaving at 7.10, meaning i had to get the half 6 bus in. Oh joys. So, getting there and seeing all the other half dead people, we waited for Neil to show up. And when he did he kept complaining that it was cold and that it was a stupid time of the morning... No, really?!
So we get to Liverpool and decide that before we go to where the tournament is being held we'll go sight seeing, get to know some of the local people and that sort of thing. I KNEW i should have made the bet a money one!
Neil: Ok, we asked for directions and we're just 3 minutes away.
Me: bet we're back here in half an hour.
Ok, so we weren't back at the same point, but we were still going around the same streets looking for the place! Eventually we called Alan up, because he used to go to Liverpool uni before joining Aston, and had come up the night before. So we eventually get there with about 5 minutes before the things starts! Quick change, and then we're ready.
Patterns were done first up, and we got a couple of medals there. Which was good. Quick lunch break, then Liverpool's black bets put on a demonstration of some of the things that they could do. And then it was the sparring.
Now in Tkd there are 2 types of sparring. With belts below Green tags, i.e 2 above me, it's one point sparring. This means that as soon as someone gets a point, then the fight stops, the point is awarded and then the fight restarts. For belts above green tag, it's continuous sparring. Ie the fight goes on without any interruptions unless warning are due or one of the competers asks for a time out or gets injured. Both sparring styles last for 90 seconds, and if it's a draw then you have another 30 seconds to get a winner.
So i thought, no problem, I'm only going to be fighting girls, and we're divided up into weight categories, so i'm not going to be fighting someone that different from me, and it's going to be point sparring. Ok, so it's the first time i've done contact sparring because i only got my pads that day, but it's going to be a nice taster of what to expect in followinng championships.
Now the way that the tournament was constructed was that the fights that would get you a medal were to be held at the end of all the sparring just before the blackbelts sparred. And then we found out that the fight would be continuous no matter what belt you were. And, as luck would have it, the number of girls in my category meant that we would all be up doing our fights at the end. In front of everyone. GREAT!
The atmosphere when you're up there and have the whole of your uni behind you cheering you on is absolutely amazing. When you focus on it that is, and not on the person trying their damnedest to kick your ass. And yeah... i made a lasses nose bleed... um... oops...
So anyway, get up, and its the fight for silver and bronze, as gold has already been decided. (i think that's how it worked...) Anyway, get up, and after the 90 seconds of continuous sparring, its a draw. (I am quite pleased to "see" (had to fight without glasses) that Neil, my instructor who was a corner judge, said that i had won. Cos it felt that way... even if i did get all the warnings in the fight... not being biased or anything...)
So we go for another 30 seconds. And again, it's a draw. So by this time we're both feeling completely knackered! But we have another 30 seconds of fighting, figuring that this time we have to have a result. No... A draw! So THEN we go onto the one point sparring. And the referee choses not to put Neil in as one of the 2 judges for the one point sparring. Grrr. Lol. Anyway, she got the silver, i got the bronze, but so what? it's a medal that the end of the day! I got a medal. I got a medal! wOOt!!
Sunny got knocked out. He's this really tiny guy at our club, but he is so fast it's unbelievable. Especially when he's fighting some of the taller guys at our club. He was only out of it for a couple of seconds, so much so that quite a lot of people thought that he was just playing it up. But anyeway, he's fine. And he won his fight, so he got gold.
So then after coming down off the adrenaline rush etc, and recovering from coming down off the adrenaline rush, it's about time for the black belts to take part. And Alan, our assistant instructor, is taking part. Now you have to understand, he's 6'6, and is probbaly one of the most serious guys that i know that do tkd. And he won. As in he got the gold medal! Go Alan! And he had the biggest smile on his face i have ever seen. He was so happy about it. He's only been a black belt for 10 months, and it was his first medal as a black belt, and it's gold. So yeah, really really pleased for him.
Had a social event in the evening. We had the medal presentation for the sparring then, as we had ran out of time beforehand. It was fantastic. Now, if i could only just remember what the hell i had to drink, how much of them i had to drink, and what did when i had drunk it, i'll be fine. I remember there was a cocktail. And that it had a lot of alcohol in it and came in a pint glass. And that i had a lot of them. And at one point Alan said that i was downing it like it was water. And i have a feeling that it was about my 4th one. After definately 4 bicardi and cokes, and Neil also bought me an aftershot. Oh, and i think i was dancing with Neil and Alan at one point during that. And at the time both Neil and myself were very very pissed.
Oh yeah, he has entrusted me with keeping all the boring sods medals for then until Tuesday. They decided that they didnt want to stay the night and that they wanted to go home straight away. Boring so-and-so... But on the plus side it makes me seem really good having 9 medals with me...
It's strange. I didn't realise that Neil and Ellie were seeing each other until last night. i mean, there were clues before hand that they were really close mates, but it never clicked in my mind that she was seeing him. I don't know what that has to do with anything... But there you go.
Suffice to say i woke up this morning with a hangover. And i am still really feeling the effects of last night. God, i am NEVER going to drink that much again. She says, after saying the same thing about this time last year after Walnuts party... One day, i might listen to myself... But then i'd see how much crap i talk.
And i'm going out again tomorrow night. I even bought a dress for it. With money i technically dont have and so couldn't afford. but so what?! I like my dress, and i plan on keeping it. Other events will surely come up sooner or later. Right. I'm off to try to recover from this state. If i make it in for 9 tomorrow i'll be impressed with myself...
